From Friday, Aug. 9, to midnight on Sunday, Aug. 11, you can enjoy tax-free shopping on most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100. This offer applies whether you’re shopping in Texas stores or online from sellers doing business in the state.

Here’s what you need to know:

• What qualifies? Most clothing and footwear items under $100, along with certain school supplies and backpacks, are eligible. For example, if you buy two shirts for $80 each, both qualify for the exemption because each is under $100, even though your total purchase is $160.
• What doesn’t qualify? Items like jewelry, handbags, and computers aren’t covered. Also, athletic and protective gear like football pads or golf cleats are excluded from the exemption.
• Special rules for backpacks: You can buy up to 10 backpacks tax-free, including those with wheels and messenger bags, as long as each is under $100. Framed backpacks and luggage, however, don’t qualify.
• Face masks: Cloth and disposable fabric masks are tax-free, but industrial-grade masks like N95s are not.
• How to shop: Qualifying items can be bought in-store, online, by phone, or by mail order. Just make sure your purchase is completed within the tax-free weekend to take advantage of the savings.

Remember, the tax exemption only applies to items purchased during the holiday. So mark your calendars and shop smart to take full advantage of these savings!
