Sales Tax Free Holiday

Tax free weekend lands on Friday, August 7 and will last through Sunday, August 9 this year. Most clothing, footwear, and school supplies priced under $100 are available for the sales tax exemption. The 2019 tax free holiday saved taxpayers over $100 million!

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, the State Comptroller’s office is encouraging taxpayers to practice social distancing and/or take advantage of purchasing the qualifying items online, by phone, mail, or custom order when:

  • the item is both delivered, and paid for, by the customer during the exemption; or
  • the customer orders and pays for the item, and the seller accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period ends.

Texas’ sales tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999, allowing Texans to save millions of dollars in state and local sales taxes each year. Taxpayers can save approximately $8 on every $100 spent!
